We focus on issues that threaten human lives, freedoms and capabilities. We conduct and support research that helps us identify and address widespread and cross-cutting challenges to survival, livelihood and dignity, including human rights violations, gender inequalities, climate change and forced migration. We strive for our research to contribute to building sustainable solutions that are people-centered, context-specific and prevention-oriented.

Our History
The institute and its research is made possible by a generous endowment to the University of Pittsburgh from the Ford Motor Company. Inaugurated in 2003 as a research institute under the direction of Professor Simon Reich, the Ford Institute has expanded to include instructional support in addition to research. The Institute was instrumental in developing one of the first human security majors in the country.
